Key things to know about using Capra maps offline:

  1. Capra maps work really well with no mobile reception automatically without needing to save an offline version. Simply by zooming in and looking at the map detail , the terrain info will be stored automatically (cached) and your location will be shown as normal.

  2. If you save an offline version, it saves the map detail including the pin information for that point in time. If details are updated by the creator after that time/date the app user will not see the changes. The app user should delete the saved version and tap the map refresh button to pull any new information.

To save an offline version, tap the globe icon on the map.

For quick access without needing to search, offline maps can be accessed via your Account screen.

More detail

Capra maps provide excellent terrain detail and info displayed on the maps with 'pins'. When heading out into areas with poor or zero connectivity you can use Capra to remain aware of where you are, this is done in two main ways.

Map 'caching'

Caching is a fancy way of saying that when you open a map the app automatically remembers the map detail without needing to do anything else. The level of detail that is cached depends on how much you zoom into the map. When you then open the map without connectivity the app digs into the app cache to check if you have the necessary map detail to display your location (the blue dot) relative to stored details.

Cache has limited space and cached details change over time to reflect the latest map information you've looked at. This means something that was cached a while ago may no longer be available.

Save for Offline

Saving a map for offline usage forces the app to gather all the detail and store it for quick access later. When you save a map for offline the app will store terrain detail and pin information. The area that is saved depends on the size of the area the specific trail course / route. For example a 100km route will require more storage than a 5km route. Once you've saved a map for offline they can quickly be accessed in the Account screen. When you've finished delete the offline map to reduce the size of the Capra app on your phone.
